Nettle (Urtica dioica)
Part Used: Aerial parts
Actions: Astringent, diuretic, hypotensive, tonic
Indications:
Nettle is an extremely versatile herb. It strengthens and supports the whole body.
Throughout Europe it is used as a spring tonic and general detoxifying remedy.
In some cases of rheumatism and arthritis, it is astoundingly successful.
Nettle is also used as a specific for treating cases of childhood eczema;
it's especially useful for nervous eczema. As an astringent, it may be used
for nose bleeds or other types of bleeding, including internal bleeding, such
as uterine hemorrhage.
Preparations and Dosage: To make an infusion, pour 1 cup
boiling water over 1-3 teaspoons dried herb; steep 10-15 minutes. Drink 3 times per day.
As a tincture, take 1-4 ml 3 times per day.
Caution: The fresh herb contains stinging
hairs that cause pronounced pain and irritation in the skin. Heat or drying removes this effect.
If you select hard, woody herbs, making a decoction will ensure that the soluble contents of
the herbs actually reach the water. To ensure that the constituents are transferred to the water,
you will need more heat for the decoction process than for infusions.
To make a decoction:
Step 1. In a glass, ceramic, earthenware, or enameled metal pot or saucepan, place 1 teaspoon
of dried herb for each cup of water. (For larger quantities, use 1 ounce of dried herb for each
pint of water.)
Step 2. Add I cup of water for each teaspoon of dried herb. Bring to a boil and then simmer for
10 to 15 minutes or for the amount of time specified for the particular herb or mixture. If the
herb contains volatile oils, cover the pot.
Step 3. Strain the herbs from the tea while still hot, sweeten if desired, and drink.
If you're preparing a mixture that contains both soft and woody herbs, prepare separate infusions
and decoctions to ensure that the more sensitive herbs are treated accordingly. Combine the two
liquids and drink.
